The Porsche 912 was introduced in 1965 as a lighter and more practical alternative for the Porsche 911. Whereas the 911 had a six cylinder engine, the 912 was fitted with the same air cooled four cylinder boxer engine as the Porsche 356 SC. Thanks to this engine the 912 was easier to drive and more than 100 kg lighter than the 911. The 90 hp were enough to make the 912 as smart and basically also as pleasant a car as the 911. In 1969 Porsche stopped producing the 912 and replaced it with the unique (VW) Porsche 914.
In 1975 the production of the 914 stopped. This generated a gap in the range of Porsche’s sports cars, which the company needed to fill to be able to continue serving their large and loyal group of customers in the United States. Therefore the 912 had been reintroduced in the form of the 912E. It was sold in the United States only and had the same chassis as the 911G models. Porsche built less than 2,100 912E and all of them had the 2-litre air-cooled Volkswagen boxer engine with a Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection. This car has been produced for two years only and, due to the limited production, is a very rare Porsche model.
This specific car was delivered new in Jacksonville, Florida. After having cruised through Florida for a few years the car crossed the United States and eventually ended up in California where it was restored to perfection around 2011. The 912E still is in an excellent technical and cosmetic condition and it drives superbly. As a special feature this 912E is fitted with the optional 15-inch Fuchs-wheels, which accentuate the car’s design. The sunny and sporty combination of a Canary Yellow exterior and a dark beige interior also benefits the car. This Porsche is not only a pleasure to look at but also a pleasure to drive. A comprehensive documentation on the history and the restoration of this car is available and that makes the whole package complete.
