The Jaguar E-Type is an iconic car that needs hardly any introduction. Even Enzo Ferrari considered it the most beautiful car in the world, however the E-Type’s performance was as sensational as its design: It was the world’s fastest production car with a maximum speed of 240 km/h.
This specific car
This good-looking Jaguar E-Type 3.8 litre Open Two Seater left the factory on Browns Lane October 17, 1963 and was shipped to the USA a week later to be delivered to Major R.L. Phillips in California. From then on the E-Type lived in the United States until it crossed the Atlantic Ocean again in 2015, this time to start its second life on the European continent. Over a period of two years the current owner had the Jaguar completely restored sparing no expense or efforts. The Jaguar was stripped to bare metal and fitted with new body panels where necessary including a completely new hood. The bodywork was then sprayed in the wonderful and rare colour Opalescent Dark Blue. All technical parts were revised including the engine, the differential and the suspension. A few things were improved, the car was fitted with a Tremec 5-speed transmission, the old transmission was retained and stays with the car. Breaks, cooling-system and shock-absorbers were improved. An aluminium flywheel, a big-bore stainless steel exhaust and an electronic ignition where built in. The original type spoke wheels, widened to 6J and fitted with a bit wider Michelin XWX tires gave the Jaguar the finishing touch. Finally, the interior was completely and skilfully re-upholstered with dark red leather, whereby, at request of the owner, the dashboard received the gorgeous aluminium finish typical for the early E-Types.
Since its restoration the car has only been driven 700 km and therefore the E-Type is in a magnificent new state.
On the road
Driving an early Jaguar E-Type is always a magic experience. A good E-Type is also by modern standards fast as lightning and fantastic in its handling. And this newly restored car excels even more with its palpable and tasteful improvements. The perfectly tuned and slightly boosted engine in combination with the 5-speed transmission, the improved breaks and chassis make this “E” even better than it already was. It is unbelievable that a car from 1963 can combine such a degree of smoothness, speed and manoeuvrability. The very appealing combination of the colour “Opalescent Dark Blue” with red leather bring out the best of the E-Type’s already fantastic lines.
We can imagine that Enzo Ferrari did have some sleepless nights……
