The Ferrari 550 Maranello was launched as the successor of the Ferrari 512/Testarossa series in 1996. While the 512M was equipped with a 12 cylinder mid-mounted flat engine, the 550 Maranello’s V12 engine was positioned in the front. As a result the 550 Maranello became easier to drive and more all-round than the ones of the Testarossa. The, without doubt, timeless lines, the long classic bonnet and the short rear end gave the Maranello a very special look. It will make many heads turn when it drives by.
With the big V12 engine each drive becomes an unforgettable experience. This engine was declared “International Engine of the Year” in the category bigger than 4.0 litre in 2000 and 2001 for a good reason. When you step on the gas pedal the 5.5 litre V12 comes to life with a roar. The 485 Italian “racehorses” are prancing to let the car accelerate. With perfect precision the driver can place the gear stick in the right slot of the manual 6-speed transmission. In just 4.4 seconds the car hits the 100 km/h. Without apprehension the driver can accelerate to a staggering maximum speed of 320km/h. Even at high speeds the car stays steady on track. The perfect weight distribution makes driving winding roads a delight. The only downside – the sporty driver will have to get the wide rear tires changed more often, because of the enormous power of the 485 hp the rubber on the tires will wear off quickly.
This specific car
This extremely beautiful 550 Maranello is finished in the stunning colour Canna di Fucile and has a classic Rosso interior. The car was originally registered in Germany and had always been serviced there by official dealers according to Ferrari standards. The documentation thereof is available. In 2004 the car became part of a collection, was put in storage and not driven for a long time.
An employee of an importer of Ferrari in The Netherlands discovered the car in Germany in 2015. It really saddens a car enthusiast to see a car that has not been driven for years. The car had not escaped the ravages of time and as a result of not being used for a very long time the gaskets and rubbers had dried out. However, a connoisseur sees the potential of a car. There was only one option, the car had to be shipped to The Netherlands and undergo a complete technical restoration. And that is what happened at Kroymans Hilversum, no expenses or efforts were spared. Not only the engine but also the transmission received a complete overhaul. Also the interior was renewed, a “sticky no more” treatment for all synthetic material was applied. Apart from that the car was equipped with a Tubi sport exhaust. Absolutely each component has been examined and under high quality standards the car has been brought back to the extraordinary good condition it is in now. It really is a top model. The complete documentation of the restoration is of course available.
